Gabala sits 225 kilometers northwest of Baku, tucked beneath the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus at an elevation that shifts from 250 to 950 meters above sea level. The district capital emerged on the site of ancient Chukhur-Gabala, a fortified settlement abandoned in the eighteenth century after repeated earthquakes and Persian incursions rendered its mud-brick citadel untenable. The 20 AZN adult fare grants access to both lines, the cabins departing every twelve minutes from 10:30 until 17:30 daily. Winter operations (December through March) prioritize ski and snowboard traffic; summer months see hikers and paragliders occupying the upper slopes. Beyond Tufandag, the district encompasses Nohur Lake, a highland reservoir stocked with trout, and the seventh-century Albanian Church at Kish village, its apse preserving frescoes commissioned under Caucasian Albanian rule before the region's Islamization. The Gabaland amusement park, opened in 2014, serves Baku families seeking weekend escapes.
